What type of stove should I buy?

There are basically two different styles of stove.

The stand alone.

This style of stove sits on a base or legs and can be sat in a chimney alcove or essentially anywhere you can get a chimney above it. The come in cast iron or enamel finishes and with or without a backboiler. They range from as little as 3kw all the way up to massive 24kw+.

Or the Cassette style.

The “Cassette” style of stove is only suitable for existing chimneys. These can be easily installed once the old fireplace has been removed, and most are designed to fit standard fireplace dimensions. They come in both boiler and non boiler styles but the ones with a boiler require more breaking out of the existing fireplace. You are also limited to around 14kw with a cassette stove as they can only be a certain size to fit into the fireplace. This is not an issue with the non boiler models as 14kw is more than enough for almost any room, but when connected to the radiators this 14kw output may be a bit limiting.
